Admission Guidelines for the Graduate School of Medicine, Kansai Medical University, 2010 Academic Year (First Semester/Second Semester)

Applicants should write down first choice and second choice (if applicable) of course and class in the Application Form.


２．Qualifications for Application
１） Those who have received a Bachelor’s degree (medicine, dentistry, or veterinary science majors only) or expect to receive one by the end of March 2011.
＊Or
a． Those who have completed, or will complete by the end of March 2011, the equivalent of 18 years of education in a foreign country (Final courses must include medical, dentistry, or veterinary science).
b． Those who have graduated from the National Self-Defense Medical College

２） Those who have received a Master’s degree or expect to receive one by the end of March 2011.

３） Those who have two (2) years or more of research experience at a college, university, or laboratory after they received a Bachelor’s degree (except for medicine, dentistry, or veterinary science majors) or they completed the equivalent of 16 years of education in a foreign country, and also are recognized by the graduate school as possessing scholastic abilities equivalent to those mentioned in any of the above 1) - 2).

４） Those who are recognized by the graduate school as possessing scholastic abilities equivalent to those who received a Bachelor’s degree (medicine, dentistry, or veterinary science majors only), and also are (will be by April 1, 2011) over twenty-four (24) years old.

５） Special social students
Those who apply to any of 1) to 4) and work in a governmental office or business and will retain their current employment status after enrolling in the graduate school and have obtained permission from their superior to take the entrance examination.

６） Special foreign students
a． Those who have foreign nationality and, have completed, or will complete by the end of March 2011, the equivalent of 18 years of education in a foreign country (Final courses must include medical, dentistry, or veterinary science).
b． Those who have foreign nationality and, have two (2) years or more of research experiences at a college, university, or laboratory after they completed the equivalent of 16 years of education in a foreign country, and also are recognized by the graduate school as possessing scholastic abilities equivalent to those mentioned in any of the above 1) - 2).

７） Long Term Study Program (Advanced Residency Course)
　In our PhD course, those who are clinicians in other clinical institutions or who are clinical assistants, fellow/senior resident, or medical staff in our university hospital may be accepted as students of Long-Term Study Program. With the accepted study schedule, students may extend the course term from 4 years (for standard course schedule) to 5 years with the same amount of study fees as the standard course schedule. Applicants who wished to apply should submit the following documents:

１． Those who meet the qualification for application 3) - 5) or 6) - b should submit the following application documents to the school affairs section during the below period for the screening of the qualifications for application. ２． Confirm each requirement of qualifications for the application (“passing the national examination for medical practitioners or not” etc.) which differs according to major subjects.


３． Period for application

４． Selection method and examination date/location
１） Acceptance will be determined by the results of entrance examinations (foreign language, major subjects) and a health report etc.
２） Examination date, subject, and location

※Report to the location of the examination by 9:15 a.m. on the test date (no delay allowed).
　　Note: Foreign language test
　English reading ability and description power are ashed.
　Dictionaries (including a medical term dictionary) can be used. However, electric dictionaries cannot be used.
　For the measurement of foreign language ability, foreign special students should choose either the same examination as for the Japanese applicants or the examination in English for only foreign applicants.
３） Be sure to bring your examination card on the test day.
４） Time/location of major subject examination will be notified on the test day.

５． Application procedure
If you want to apply to the school, you must submit all of the following documents to the educational affairs office of the Graduate School of Medicine, Kansai Medical University. If you send your documents by mail, send them by registered express delivery, and mark "admission application" on the envelope in red ink.

  Application form	Use the form provided. On the backside of the application form, state your academic background and job history from the high school graduation without any omission. Paste a photograph (5 cm long　×　4 cm wide).

  A health certificate	Fill in the health certificate form provided by the University. The certificate issued by a university hospital, general hospital or health center after May 1 for 1st semester applicants or November 1 for 2nd semester applicants.
  A self-addressed envelope for sending an examination card (Only application by mail)	Standard size envelope (20.5 cm long × 9 cm wide) addressed to yourself with zip code and postage (380 yen) for delivery to you by registered express mail.
  Evidence of Diplomas or Degrees	Not necessary for students of our university
  A copy of doctor’s license	Necessary, if the name of subject is marked a or b
  A certificate of the graduate school and the academic transcript	Necessary, if you have received a Master’s degree
  Examination fee	20,000 yen
  A certificate of alien registration (Only foreign applicants)	Foreign applicants should provide a certificate of alien registration, stating the qualification of and period for staying, issued by the city office within three months of applying.

  ※Photographs should be a front view from the chest up, without a hat, taken within three months of applying. (Fill out your name and college or university on the backside)

Applicants who are granted admission will be required to complete the following procedure between:October 13 (Wed.), 2010 to October 27 (Wed.), 2010- First semester: March 9 (Wed.), 2011 to March 23 (Wed), 2011- Second semester.If the procedure is not completed by the date specified, it will be assumed that the applicant does not intend to enroll in the school and he/she will not be allowed to register. Examination fee paid and application documents submitted will not be returned for any reason.
　Entrance fee: ￥200,000
　Tuition (including training fee): 250,000 yen for the first semester (500,000 yen/year)
　　＊Tuition for special foreign students: 125,000 yen for the first semester (250,000 yen/year)
　　＊Tuition for special foreign students, special working students, and students specializing in basic/social medicine may be exempted entirely upon application and examination.
　　＊Tuition for Long-Term Study Program (Advanced Residency Program): 200,000 yen for the first semester (400,000 yen/year)

８． Attention
As the second semester examination may not be conducted due to a maximum enrollment, applicants for the second semester should reconfirm on the bulletin board of the graduate school or ask to the educational affairs office in advance.


９． Flex-time System and Holiday Opening Lectures:
In our graduate school, we have already incorporated a system for working students to study up-to-date medical knowledge and technology as well as to train for medical investigation. The working students should belong to public sectors or private companies and acknowledged by their supervisor to study in our university (Article 34; Rule of the Graduate School Kansai Medical University). In addition to this system, we have adopted flex-time system and holiday opening lectures from April 1, 2005 to facilitate education and guidance for graduate school students who are clinicians or medical researchers. This system is supported by the special clause for article 14, Approval System of the Establishment of Universities, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Students applicable to this system can be trained or have lectures not only in ordinary weekday day-time hours but also at specified hours in evening or holidays with agreement of students and supervising professors.

　In the graduate school education, special hours or periods including evening hours can be allocated for education and research guidance if necessary for the education.


10． Other opportunities
１） Teaching Assistant (TA) system
Support for the graduate school students working as teaching or research assistants in this graduate school. Aimed at promoting research and education at the school and fostering successors.
２）　Research Assistant (RA) system
Aimed for enhancing, promoting research and education at this graduate school and supporting the students of the graduate school.
３）　Scholarship system of Japan Student Service Organization
The Japan Scholarship Foundation grants loans to students of this graduate school who need financial assistance to attend school and are academically superior, of outstanding character, and in good health.
４）　Disaster and Accident Insurance for Students (Japan Educational Exchange and Services)
Insurance is available to cover physical damage or injury incurred by accidents during study or research activities, school activities, extra-curricular activities, at or while commuting to and from school facilities. Applicants may join this insurance plan by paying an insurance premium of 3,900 yen (for 4 years).

An applicant who meets the following requirements, (1) -(4), and also will be recommended by this school’s professor of the major the applicant is applying for.
�T　Those who correspond to any of the followings
１） Those who have graduated, or are expected to graduate by the end of March 2011, from the college (medicine, dentistry, or veterinary science majors only) or university.
２） Those who have completed a master course or are expected to complete a master course at a graduate school by the end of March 2011.
３） Those who are foreign national and have completed 18 years of scholastic education in a foreign country or are expected to complete such education by the end of March 2011 (Final courses must include medical, dentistry, or veterinary science). (Special foreign student)
４） Those who are recognized by the graduate school as possessing scholastic abilities equivalent to those mentioned in any of the above 1) - 3).
�U　Those who have received good grades in their final courses (university courses) and responsibly are recommended by the president of the concerned university.
�V　Those who have linguistic ability demonstrated by a TOEFL score of 600 points or more or a TOEIC score of 900 points or more.
�W　Those who make a commitment to enroll if they are given the admission.

If the applicant under section 2-(1)-1) “Recommended person and requirements” fails to graduate from university or college by the end of March 2011, the admission to this graduate school shall be cancelled.
　Those who failed the examination of recommendation shall not be treated unfavorably in later general entrance examinations.
